George Greene serves as the Associate Athletic Director of High Performance and Competitive Success at Stony Brook Athletics.
He ascended to the position in the fall of 2019 after serving three years as the Assistant Athletics Director for Athletic Performance. Greene oversees all aspects of athletic performance, performance nutrition and sports science. He also partners with coaches and administrators to identify opportunities to achieve sustained competitive success. He extensively works with the men’s basketball and football programs.
His three years leading the athletic performance department have witnessed significant growth, including a focus on the integration between strength and conditioning, performance nutrition and sports science. Stony Brook student-athletes have reaped the benefits of performance nutrition services, including the launch of a training table in September 2019, the Seawolves fueling station in January 2017, and the development of a performance nutrition team of registered dieticians to educate teams and individual athletes.
Stony Brook has stayed at the cutting edge of technology. The department has invested in and utilized GPS technology, heart-rate monitors, force-plate testing and velocity-based training. Additionally, Greene has collaborated on projects with the health science department, the school of physical therapy, nutrition and the computer science department. These enhancements and relationships have allowed the athletic performance staff to design individualized training programs to maximize the potential of each student-athlete at Stony Brook.
Administratively, Greene serves on the Athletic Director's leadership council and management team. He also co-leads the student-athlete support tactical team. Greene arrived at Stony Brook from the University of Mary Washington, where he served as director of strength and conditioning. At UMW, Greene had the unique opportunity to be the first strength and conditioning coach in school history. He is credited with transforming the program into one of the best in the region. He oversaw the training and conditioning for 22 varsity sports and was responsible for designing the newly renovated varsity weight room. Additionally, Greene oversaw all aspects of performance nutrition and spearheaded several fundraising initiatives to help enhance the program.
Prior to his work at UMW, Greene served as a tactical strength and conditioning specialist for the U.S. Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg. He provided strength and conditioning services to special operations soldiers to reduce the onset of injuries and improve performance in preparation for deployment. During his time at Fort Bragg, Greene received an excellence award from the command team for providing outstanding service and exceeding expectations.
Before working for the military, Greene spent four years as assistant director of strength and conditioning at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He was responsible for designing and implementing training programs for eight varsity sports and assisted with football and men’s lacrosse.
Prior to UMass, he served as the sports performance director at Athletic Republic on Long Island. He developed training programs for high school, collegiate and professional athletes while supervising staff and marketing and prospecting for new teams and athletes.
Greene got his start in the field of strength and conditioning by working in the Big Ten Conference at the University of Iowa. He assisted with men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball. During his career, he has worked with several All-Americans, numerous all-conference selections and multiple athletes who have gone on to sign professional contracts in their respective sports.
Greene is a graduate of Springfield College with a degree in applied exercise science. He holds a master’s degree through Fort Hays State University in health and human performance.
Greene is a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) and a registered strength and conditioning coach with distinction (RSCC*D) through the NSCA, a certified specialist in sports nutrition through the ISSA, a certified sports performance coach through USAW, a corrective exercise specialist (CES) through NASM, and is CPR/AED certified through the American Red Cross.
