A Coherent Framework for the Whole S&C Profession

The IQF Level Descriptors are designed to span the full breadth of the strength and conditioning profession, from the earliest stages of foundational practice through to the highest levels of thought leadership.
This is possible because the framework is method-agnostic.
It does not require practitioners to adopt a particular training system, teach a specific exercise, follow a fixed model, or conform to a single methodology. Instead, it focuses on the quality of reasoning, judgement, decision-making, autonomy, and error correction that sits behind effective practice.
This is important because S&C is applied across many sports, populations, settings, cultures, resources, and performance environments. A coherent professional framework must therefore be flexible enough to apply across this diversity, while still being clear enough to define meaningful progression.
In this view, effective practice is grounded in the principles and values of science: explanation, reason, criticism, evidence, problem-solving, and continual improvement.
Practitioners are free to develop solutions appropriate to their environment, provided they can define the problem clearly, justify their decisions, evaluate outcomes, and refine their approach over time.
This creates a more open and mature basis for professional development. It reduces unnecessary barriers to entry, avoids dogmatic approaches to practice, and supports practitioners in building effective solutions for the environments in which they actually work.
Across all levels, the same broad logic applies:
define the problem clearly
develop better explanations
make reasoned decisions
test practice against outcomes
identify and correct error across all stages
continue improving over time
The IQF Level Descriptors provide a shared structure for this progression, from Level 1 foundational practice to Level 8 thought leadership, which is valid for all aspects of the global S&C profession.
