A Shift from Rule-Based Practice to Explanatory Problem-Solving

One of the central ideas in the IQF Level Descriptors is that progression in S&C should not be understood simply as the accumulation of methods, exercises, facts, or credentials.
At the early stages of practice, rule-based approaches are often necessary. Practitioners need structure, guidance, and externally defined outcomes to operate consistently and safely.
As practitioners develop, however, competence increasingly depends on the ability to define problems clearly, reason from principles, interpret context, and adapt decisions based on evidence, feedback, and intended outcomes.
This reflects a problem-solving view of practice. Practitioners identify a problem, develop a conjecture (working hypothesis) about how it may be solved, test that approach in practice, expose it to criticism and feedback, and continually refine it over time.
At the highest levels, S&C practice becomes increasingly explanatory. The practitioner is not simply applying methods, but developing better explanations of adaptation and performance under real-world complexity.
This matters because good explanations have reach beyond the immediate problem. When practitioners understand why something works, under what conditions it is likely to work, and where it may fail, that knowledge can inform better decisions across other athletes, environments, and performance problems.
This is the developmental shift described in the IQF:
rule-based practice → principle-based practice → explanatory problem-solving
